Mt. Lemmon Fiery Foliage

Mt. Lemmon Fiery Foliage
8" X 10"
acrylic and charcoal on paper

This was a Daily Paintworks challenge.  Mt. Lemmon is beautiful when the leaves change colors.  The skies are usually crisp, clear and blue.  The area has grown back quite a bit from the huge Aspen fire which engulfed the top of the mountain.

Rich Valley Dirt, Arroyo Grande

Rich Valley Dirt, Arroyo Grande
16 X 20 inches
acrylic on linen canvas

I passed by this farm after a hike in the wilderness area behind Lopez Lake. The dirt in this area is rich black, making these valley farms some of the most productive in CA. Vineyards and oak trees patch the hills.

Sonoita

Sonoita
16 X 20 inches
acrylic on canvas

The Sonoita high desert grasslands are among my favorite areas to drive around in Arizona. This region is especially striking during the summer monsoon storms. The sky seems to stretch forever above the huge expanses of rolling grass. The distant looming mountains are masked by misty clouds. Oak trees and mesquite stud the hills.

Through the Trees

Through the Trees
36 X 24 inches
acrylic on canvas
April 2011

This painting was inspired by a short walk that starts at Sycamore hot springs and follows a dirt road through a tunnel of scrub oak, manzanita, and sycamore trees. Just past the tunnel of trees, the road reaches a summit overlooking Avila Bay and Port San Luis.

Anza Borrego

Anza Borrego Wildflowers
indian ink and acrylic on heavy brown paper

It is hard not to be inspired by all the wildflowers that are in bloom right now. Looking for ideas, I came across the following pictures from a trip out to the Anza Borrego desert.  The Anza Borrego is a dry and harsh desert.  The fragile, beautiful wildflowers that somehow survive here are a stark contrast to their bleak setting.
